Get to Know the Galleria: Greg White, Westin Galleria Dallas

If you think spending the day at Galleria Dallas is great, imagine being able to spend the night. Well, almost. A stay at the Westin Hotel at Galleria Dallas is the next best thing.

For this month’s installment of “Get to Know the Galleria,” we spoke to Westin at Galleria Dallas General Manager Greg White about his experience managing the most stylish hotel in town.

What originally motivated you to get into the hospitality industry?

I grew up in a very blue-collar household in Baltimore, and our family budget didn’t allow for many trips, so travel was always aspirational for me. I began to meet people from all over the world while working at a bed and breakfast that catered to educators from Johns Hopkins University, and when I heard their stories, I was hooked!

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding part about working at the Westin Galleria Dallas?

I love getting to meet such a diverse group of people each and every day. No two days are alike here. Plus, the Westin Galleria Dallas is such an iconic property, and it attracts the best talent in the city. There really is no other property like it.

What do you love most about your location inside Galleria Dallas?

When I forget a birthday or anniversary and need to do some last-minute shopping, there’s a host of retailers just steps away.

In your opinion, what is the most overlooked or underrated amenity at the Westin Galleria Dallas?

People often forget that in addition to our beautiful guest rooms, we offer over 50,000 square feet of meeting space. Plus, our international culinary team will blow your socks off!

Which travel destinations are on your bucket list?

I would love to visit Machu Picchu in Peru. The photos I’ve seen are amazing, and the history and exclusiveness of the destination are very alluring. I’d also love to visit Cuba because I fell in love with its delicious food and salsa dancing during my years working in Miami.

What’s one trait all Westin Galleria Dallas employees share?

A sense of family and belonging. More than 30 of our employees have worked at the Westin for more than 25 years, and we have an amazing culture of family that has evolved during that time.

Do you have a favorite season at the Westin?

I love the holiday season. That includes Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s. It’s a time when we get to really dress up the hotel and put on a show. I love to share in the joy of holiday travelers as they reconnect with their friends and families at the hotel.

What’s your favorite thing about staying in a hotel when you travel?

This might be a strange answer, but I actually prefer not to stay in a hotel when I travel. I’d rather jump in an RV or rent a cabin for a more rustic adventure. Staying in a hotel is too much like work for me. I look at everything with a critical eye, and my wife and four kids can’t stand it.

What’s one piece of advice you’d offer someone who wants to get into the hospitality industry?

Be ready for anything, and have a great sense of humor. The hotel business offers us a glimpse into the lives of our guests, and when people travel, they often leave their common sense at home. This can create some humorous (and not-so-humorous) moments. Just remember to keep smiling and ask, “How can I help you?”
