You already know that Galleria Dallas is the place for hot fashion. But did you know it’s also the place for ice-cold fun? This month’s “Get to Know the Galleria” is spotlighting Galleria Ice Skating Center’s David Kirby.
What do you love most about your location inside Galleria Dallas?
Being at the center of it all. So many great restaurants and stores surround us, and we can be seen by people on all four levels of the mall. In a way, we are kinetic art. It’s fun for shoppers to watch a class of really talented skaters work on a drill team or spinning and jumping. It’s just as fun to watch people skating recreationally, and, of course, it’s fun to watch both professional and non-professional skaters fall down on occasion.
What’s a typical day like at the Galleria Dallas ice rink?
Guests of all ages and abilities skate in our Skating School, attend public sessions, events and parties and visit our retail Skate Shop. Our dedicated team of associates spends many nights maintaining ice conditions and producing special ice paintings.
What sparked your initial interest in ice skating?
Both my parents were Canadian National Champions, so I was naturally drawn to the sport. I had a wonderful career as a competitive athlete for the United States and was a principal performer with the Ice Capades in the 1970s.
What has been the most memorable performance you’ve seen on the Galleria Dallas ice thus far?
It’s so hard to pick. Since 1991, more Olympic champions have performed at Galleria Dallas than any other ice rink in Texas. Many are my friends and, in the interest of being diplomatic, every performance has been memorable. You can check out our latest shows and events on our YouTube channel or website.
What is the most rewarding part of working at the Galleria Dallas ice rink?
Meeting, working and developing relationships with so many great people. Our job is unique and attracts health-conscious guests who love to skate in a safe and comfortable environment for fun, exercise and entertainment. The Ice Skating Center works hard to ensure an enjoyable experience for all guests. It’s especially rewarding when so many guests who started skating with us as kids now come back with their own kids.
What’s one thing people may not know about the Galleria Dallas ice rink?
More than 50 marriage proposals have taken place on the ice at Galleria Dallas.
What do you think will be the biggest benefit of adding the Studio Rink at Galleria Dallas?
We’re very excited about our new Studio Rink opening this summer. This new and revolutionary ice rink will not be in the center of the mall, but instead in a more private, intimate area where guests can rent the entire rink, and it’s adjacent to a large party room for themed birthday parties, company events and much more. This allows us to expand our programs and provide more personalized services to the Galleria Dallas ice-skating business.
For more information about the Studio Rink, check out galleriaiceskatingcenter.com after June 1, when details and reservations will be posted. And in the meantime, enjoy this video of Olympic champion Johnny Weir performing on the Galleria ice during the 2016 Beauty Live event.
